Platte Woods United Methodist Church

Family Ministries

PWC has a focus on Family Ministries meant to enhance family life for all members. Through the work of Vicki Dale, minister of Counseling and Family Ministries, and the PWC Family Ministries Committee, a variety of workshops, classes and support groups are offered throughout the year.

PWC Family Retreat
It's that time of year again! It's time for family relaxation and fun! Have you planned your family get-away yet? If you are looking for fun ideas that are reasonable in price, check this out. Platte Woods Church, along with Heartland Center, sponsor a Family Retreat July 31st through August 2nd. This is the sixth year that PWC has participated in the Family Retreat. Go to www.heartlandcenter.org for more information. Click on Adult & Family Events, then Family Camp. Register early to reserve a cabin, otherwise, you will be "stuck" in motel-style camping. Contact Vicki Dale (741-2972 ext. 229), for more information and scholarship information.

2009 Summer Programs
The Grandparent and Relative Caregivers Northland Support Group meets every 4th Monday of the month at PWUMC. Meeting times are 6:30-8 p.m. This group offers support, information and resources to anyone raising a grandchild or other relative. Contact persons are:

  • Lynn Vanderweel, Family Friends Program-Children's Mercy Hospital and Northland Task Force on Grandfamilies, 816-415-4144
  • Diana Milne, University of Missouri Extension-Clay, Platte & Ray Counties and Northland Task Force on Grandfamilies, 816-407-3490

The Grief Support Group has cherished our time wandering through the wilderness of grief together. We will begin meeting July 15. We will begin a 10-session journey through the book "Living with Loss" by Dan Moseley. This time we will meet in the evening so we hope even those who work during the day can join us. We will meet from 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings through September 30th. We will not meet on August 5 or 12 so we can enjoy fellowship at the church's August activities. Group members can purchase the book on their own or order one through the group facilitator, Vicki Dale. Vicki can be contacted by e-mail or by phone (816-741-2972 ext. 229). We have all found the support of the group to be precious to us and we invite new members to join us in our journey.

New Ministry on Aging: Family Ministries is launching a new ministry on aging. If you are interested in helping in the development of this new ministry, contact Vicki Dale (816-741-2972 ext. 229).

Postpartum Support Group: Having a baby is a major life-changing event. Often, women can experience a range of emotional highs and lows during pregnancy or following birth. Most of the time the "baby blues" new mothers experience pass quickly, but sometimes they do not. In fact, 1 in 8 women will experience postpartum depression after birth. Joining a support group for new moms or talking with other new moms can often help you feel better. If you believe that you or someone you know may be suffering from postpartum depression, it is time to seek help. Speak up when you are down! The Postpartum Support Group meets on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the PWC Parlor. Contact Shannon Beane by e-mail or at 419-1867, for more information. This group is offered with the support of The Postpartum Resource Center of Kansas (913-677-1300 or 1-866-363-1300).
