You are Invited!!!
Ten years ago, Platte Woods Church said yes to a vision.
This vision was to create a space of welcome and belonging for more and more people in the Northland to call this their spiritual home.
It was a vision to connect people with the love of God and love of one another through our ministries in meaningful ways.
It was a vision to build a beautiful space to serve the community through Gathering, Growing, Giving and Going for generations to come.
Now, you are invited to continue this journey, taking care of our past, present, and future.
Dear Church Family,
On Sunday, April 27, we are launching our Taking Care Capital Campaign 2025! A capital campaign allows us to address larger financial needs without impacting our general operating budget or affecting ministries. This commitment is above and beyond our typical generosity. It is also a chance to take a first step in your spiritual journey with generosity.
Through two capital campaigns in 2014-16 and 2017-19 this congregation committed to raising $13.1 million to complete our Worship Center, our gathering space (lobby), and our Student Center. We have been faithfully living into that vision of a decade ago, even with a global pandemic in the middle of it all!
Our Taking Care Capital Campaign 2025, with a goal of $1.25 million by the end of 2026, we will be taking care of our debt, our building, and the environment. Through our collective generosity, above and beyond our regular giving, we will be taking care of our past, our present, and our future.
Platte Woods Church has had a special calling for over 65 years to reach people in the Northland of Kansas City in the love of Christ.
Your generosity in this campaign will position us well to bless and serve the Northland in the love of Christ for the next 65 years and beyond, as a church where all people can belong, be curious, and be courageous.
My family and I, our PWC Leadership Council, our Capital Campaign Team, and our PWC staff are eager to join together in reaching this goal with you!
With gratitude for God’s faithfulness in ages past and hope for years to come,
Pastor Yvi

Past
Debt
Taking care of the remaining 3.5% of our mortgage.
Through two capital campaigns in 2014-16 and 2017-19, this congregation committed to raising $13.1 million to complete our Worship Center, our gathering space (lobby), and our Student Center.
Since completing this newest part of the church, we have welcomed 1,764 first-time guests to Gather for worship. 411 people made membership commitments to PWC. 193 infants, children, and adults have been baptized. 167 youth have been confirmed. We have faithfully lived into that vision of a decade ago, even with a global pandemic in the middle of it all!
At the beginning of this campaign, all that remains of that debt is $459,472.* With your help, we will be taking care of this debt by Dec. 5, 2025.
Eliminating this debt will help us continue living out our mission of inviting all people into full life together in Jesus Christ.
Present
Building
Taking care of our education wing.
Fifty-seven years ago, Platte Woods Church began a ministry to the community around us through the Parents Day Out program, and beginning in 1994 through our Sunbeams Preschool program. Thousands of children have received excellent early childhood education in an environment of Christian care and love here in our first and second educations wings (built in 1964 and 2003 respectively).
Each week, nearly one hundred children and volunteers fill this wing of our building to grow through PWKids! They grow and play in safe and engaging environments designed specifically for them. On the floor above them, their parents, grandparents, and neighbors attend GrowGroups and Sunday School. The many levels of our education wing are a visible reminder of our commitment to serve people in every stage of life.
Now these parts of our facility are in need of roof replacement and a new HVAC after 23+ years of consistent operation. We are committed to taking care of these capital improvements for the continued impact of our education programs as well as our use for spiritual formation for our own congregation.
Future
Environment
Taking care of our energy consumption
Today, energy costs to heat, cool, and power our building average $10,000/month. Ten years from now, that cost could be more than double as energy costs rise and temperatures become more extreme. Our staff and church members have been working to gain an understanding of how PWC can become a leader in green energy in our community. Our energy consumption is part of our impact on God’s creation here in our corner of the world.
We have the opportunity to prioritize taking care of our energy consumption by installing solar arrays to power our building, and free up future funds for our next generation to fuel ministry, not utility bills.
Every dollar to this campaign will go to the continued work of inviting all people into full life together in Jesus Christ, for generations to come.
Notes
* $219,930 was contributed through phase 1 of our Taking Care capital campaign in November of 2024. This money was paid to our loan on February 28, 2025. These contributions are being considered in the $1.25M total.

FAQs
Campaign Questions
-
Commitments (also known as Pledges) help the church identify participation in the campaign and plan for spending on the campaign initiatives. We will complete the pledge portion (Phase 2) of our campaign in June 2025 and move right into the contribution phase (Phase 3), which will extend through December 2026. This allows for each of us to prayerfully consider participating in this campaign and plan financial gifts to the church over an 18-month time period.
-
Life can be unpredictable. Even when we plan well and make decisions to live out that plan, some things are out of our control. At PWC, we want to walk with people through all seasons, not just the easy ones. By making a commitment, you are setting the intention to follow through. If, for any reason, you are unable to fulfill your commitment, all we ask is that you communicate with the church. Communication can be as simple as an email to a pastor or someone on staff, or even a prayer request. When something changes in your life, it is important for your church to be able to support you. There will be no judgment or shame from your church. We want to reflect the same grace that God shows to all of us.
-
On the commitment card, and when you set up payments, you have control of the frequency of your giving.
There are many ways to give to this capital campaign. An 18-month window gives many people an opportunity to do more than they could in a shorter time frame. This is a vital season for people to build up their generosity muscles.
We ask that you prayerfully consider your gifts and the timing of your gifts to honor your intentions. We will accept one-time gifts as well as multiple gifts throughout the campaign or maybe annual or semi-annual payments will work better for you.
During the campaign, you will hear stories of fellow church goers who decided to sell something they were hanging onto to free up funds for the campaign. Others determined that after giving to previous capital campaigns, their regular giving to the general budget could be increased once the campaign commitment was fulfilled. Still others will choose to give up one coffee drink a week and gift that savings to the church. The body of Christ is full of endless possibilities!
-
No. A capital campaign allows us to address larger financial needs without impacting our general operating budget or affecting ministries. This commitment is above and beyond our typical generosity. This campaign is taking care of specific capital needs that our leadership has identified as a priority for this season.
Maybe you are considering giving financially to the church for the first time. Participation in this capital campaign may invoke your curiosity to take a first step into a spiritual journey with generosity. Perhapsthis will begin a rhythm of financial giving to your church. Wherever you find yourself on your spiritual journey, we want you to know that we are happy to join you! Please reach out to a pastor or staff member to ask questions to help you make the right decisions for you!

We invite everyone to participate in this campaign in some tangible way. At Platte Woods Church, we commit to the shared spiritual practices of Gather, Grow, Give, and Go. We believe a healthy understanding and stewardship of our personal finances and resources is an important part of our spiritual life. Generosity through giving financially is an element of our spiritual formation, like Gathering for worship or Going to Serve in our community. God desires for us to give joyfully and cheerfully. Giving in support of the many ministries at Platte Woods Church not only impacts those in the community who receive the help, but Giving of our personal resources is part of our spiritual journey. As Jesus-followers, we strive to be generous people and be the best stewards possible of the gifts we have been given.
Those of us who call PWC home create a mosaic of experiences. Financial gifts are much more about our response to how God is moving in our lives than about a specific amount of money. We do not focus on equal share but rather focus on taking equal steps in our Christian formation. Gifts towards this capital campaign should be considered above and beyond our generosity to the general budget of the church. And yet, this invitation may be coming at the right time for someone to consider this a beginning opportunity to, along with others and with God’s help, financially support the church.
-
Yes. The only people who will have direct access to the details of your pledge will be our staff finance team. Your commitment to this campaign can be made in all the same ways you can give to the general budget of PWC. The most cost-effective way to give to the church is to set up automatic payments via ACH.
-
If you have an IRA, consider contributing through a Qualified Charitable Distribution. A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from an IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity like PWC. These gifts expand the impact of your giving, because instead of paying taxes on the money, every dollar goes directly to mission and ministry. Seek advice from a financial advisor to determine the best way to maximize this opportunity. For more information contact our Finance Manager Misty Wilkinson.

Please see the Taking Care capital campaign brochure for more information about the campaign and about taking a next step into giving financially to PWC!
Commitment Questions
-
Leadership began Phase 1 of our campaign in November of 2024. In this phase, church leadership and lead supporters of the two previous capital campaigns were asked to prayerfully consider their support of this campaign. In response, we have received lead financial gifts and pledges of over $260,000 to the Taking Care campaign!
With this remarkable jumpstart, we committed to launching Phase 2 in worship on April 27, 2025. This phase will extend through the commitment season ending on June 22, 2025.
Phase 3 of our campaign includes the contribution season and extends through December 2026. During this phase, we will pay off the mortgage, implement facility upgrades, begin the process of bringing sustainable energy to PWC – and share with others through gifting to the Mozambique Initiative (see below).
-
The building mortgage loan will mature on December 5th, 2025. Interest rates are currently higher than our existing rate. If this debt is not paid by the maturity date, the interest on the outstanding debt will be 2% above the current interest rate offered. At the outset of this campaign, the loan balance was $460K.
We have upcoming facility needs in aging parts of our building while maintaining other unexpected costs. Cost predictions for these facility needs are approximately $350K.
We want to do our part to decrease our impact on the energy grid by utilizing more energy efficient and solar opportunities available to us. Initial estimates for these initiatives range up to $400K.
-
The focus of this capital campaign is to prioritize Taking Care of past, present and future projects of the church. We will be Taking Care of the remaining debt on our current building, preparing for expenses related to maintaining the Education Wing and older parts of our building, and plan for the use of solar energy to reduce the energy costs of operating our facility. We believe the financial goal of this campaign aligns with our mission, vision and values.
In late summer 2024, the leadership of the church renewed our focus to eliminate the remaining debt on our building before the loan’s maturity date. This debt elimination will bolster our operating budget and eliminate the need to refinance the loan with additional interest.
This campaign also encompasses other capital projects as we consider the ways in which we use and maintain our building and grounds through:
Preparing for certain larger needs of our facility such as roofing issues and HVAC upgrades necessary to maintain our facility for daily preschool and childcare programs, other community resources and ministry needs.
The use of sustainable energy to reduce our average $10,000 monthly energy bills and become better stewards of the environment. This includes finishing the installation of electric car charging stations, which began with the last construction project.
-
With low interest rates available, the church budgeted to carry a loan on the building through two consecutive campaigns from 2014 - 2019. In 2020, the course was set to eliminate the remaining balance of this debt. As our world completely changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, with $1,078,000 balance on the debt, the loan repayment plan was adjusted as church leadership prioritized ministry and community needs, staffing and operational costs of the church. Since then, the debt was reduced from $1.078M in June of 2020 to $482K on July 1, 2024, through capital receipts and general gifts to the church.
Now, with this Taking Care campaign, we look forward to being completely free of this debt!
-
The new construction costs were budgeted at $13.1M. In March 2015, the congregation approved for the church to finance up to $4.75M of the project costs.
-
Two capital campaigns were planned over the course of the construction phase. The Home capital campaign launched in 2014, beginning the process of building a new worship center, a large greeting and gathering space and a dedicated student center. With strong congregational support, this campaign raised just over $7M from 2014-2016.
As planned, the 3-year Impact capital campaign was immediately launched in 2017 with the purpose of reducing the debt incurred to complete the building project while maintaining our ministry impact. The Impact campaign raised $5 million dollars from 2017-2019.

We believe we have a responsibility to bless others as we are so blessed! The Missouri Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church has a long-standing relationship with the UMC in Mozambique. Platte Woods Church also has a history of partnering with the Mozambique UMC community in various ways. So, in conjunction with this campaign, we will commit to giving $25,000 to the Mozambique Initiative, a trustworthy and effective ministry partner, to provide solar energy to 10 churches. Through your gifts, this is yet another way we can bless others beyond our own community.
